15,000 People Call in to Fair Share America-Families Over Billionaires Town Hall with Reps. Jamie Raskin and Marilyn Strickland
March 14, 2025
People demand to know how to stop Donald Trump, Elon Musk, & Members of Congress from giving tax cuts to the rich and corporations by cutting public services we rely on
“As we are facing the ‘Big Grift’ from the Trump-Musk administration, we have to lift our voices up and let people know what is going on.” - Rep Marilyn Strickland
WASHINGTON – Last night, 15,000 people from around the country joined Fair Share America and Families Over Billionaires to hear about the stakes of the tax debate in Congress and how they can get involved in stopping harmful policies that drain resources from their families and communities in order to pay for further handouts to the rich and corporations.
“We’ve got 320 million people in this country versus at most 30 billionaires. We should be able to take them down,” said Rep Jamie Raskin (MD-08), urging people to turn out and appeal to their elected representatives in order to protect our democracy and the public services we rely on.
“If we do not engage with Republicans, we are giving them a free pass,” said Representative Marilyn Strickland (WA-10). “They have been conspicuously silent, conspicuously afraid to speak up when I know people know this is wrong. So as we are facing the ‘Big Grift’ from the Trump-Musk administration, we have to lift our voices up and let people know what is going on.”
Fair Share America works with 400 partner organizations in the states and around the country to lift people's voices in opposition to further tax handouts for billionaires and corporations at the expense of the rest of us. Our partners are holding town hall events during the upcoming congressional recess (March 15-23), inviting members of Congress to speak to their constituents directly about the decisions they are making in Washington. “We know Social Security, and Medicare and Medicaid are under attack,” said Fair Share America Executive Director Kristen Crowell. “We know that the last time Congress was in recess, people turning out at their offices and town halls created a ton of public pressure. We need to put the pressure on members of Congress once again to either get on our side or be held accountable for abandoning us.”
Working in partnership with labor unions, grassroots organizers, as well as leaders and advocates from across the country, Families Over Billionaires is a campaign designed to make sure the American people understand what the 2025 fight is really about: Politicians in Washington trying to cut taxes for the rich at the expense of working people. Their recent poll found that voters across party lines overwhelmingly disapprove of Congress giving more tax cuts to wealthy individuals (76% of voters disapprove) and large corporations (70% of voters disapprove). “Republicans in Congress have already admitted that they plan to use the cuts that Elon Musk is making to pay for their giant billionaire tax breaks,” said Michael Linden, Executive Director of Families Over Billionaires. “It is not too late to stop this. The American people – Democrats, Independents, and Republicans alike – do not want to pay for tax cuts for rich people while their own bills keep going up and up. Politicians in Washington need to decide whose side they are actually on.”
