Recess Roundup: Stuffed Chicken Meetings, Empty Chair Town Halls and Rallies Amplify Constituent Voices in States Red and Blue

A stuffed chicken in Pennsylvania has now faced more questions from constituents and held more public town hall meetings this recess than many members of Congress. 

We wish that was the start of a joke. 

But there’s nothing funny about how many Members of Congress continue to hide from their constituents after voting for massive cuts to essential programs in order to fund more tax cuts for billionaires and big business,  

The people refuse to be silent though and are embracing more and more creative ways to make their voices heard in states nationwide. So once again, here are the latest highlights from the states from  the past 24 hours.

Pennsylvania: WVIA - Demonstrators outside McCormick's Scranton office say no one answers constituents' calls

Constituents from around the region asked a stuffed chicken questions about major social issues outside U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick's Scranton office Monday afternoon.The plush yellow toy was a stand-in for the Republican senator and his staff, who demonstrators say have not been answering the phones at McCormick's offices around Pennsylvania.

Iowa: KCRG - Sen. Grassley town hall gets heated

A stop on Senator Chuck Grassley’s 99-county tour turned tumultuous Wednesday afternoon. It took place at the public library in Dysart where nearly 100 people showed up to ask questions of the senator, some in attendance say that number could have been much higher if people knew this town hall was happening.
