State Groups Speak Out After US Reps Fail To Heed Constituent Warnings + Pass House Budget Resolution

February 26, 2025

Despite the fervent opposition to the House budget resolution in districts red and blue while members engaged with constituentslast week, tonight the House passed its budget resolution that will force massive cuts to programs that support working families in order to fund tax cuts for the rich and big business.

Unsurprisingly given the widespread opposition to such misplaced budget priorities and real impact on state budgets, grassroots leaders and coalition voices rose up from the states immediately following the vote. Here is just some of what they had to say:

VIEW FROM THE STATES

PENNSYLVANIA: “Middle-class families pay their fair share in taxes — even as prices of everyday essentials like food and gas continue to rise. It’s time for the wealthiest individuals and corporations to pay what they owe too. We need representatives in Congress who will stand with everyday Pennsylvanians and reject budget proposals that gut vital programs just to benefit the richest of the rich. Every Republican Representative in Pennsylvania today failed this essential test of decency and courage.” - Pennsylvania Policy Center Executive Director Marc Stier

VIRGINIA: “If these draconian cuts move forward, they will harm the lives of millions of Virginians by making health care and food more expensive and slashing jobs across our commonwealth. The House budget framework attempts to hand a massive tax cut to the ultra-wealthy and corporations by slashing health care and food security programs. This would leave a massive hole in Virginia’s budget and would leave families without health care and kids without food in Virginia.” - President and CEO of The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis Ashley C. Kenneth

MICHIGAN: “Today, House Republicans left Michigan’s working families behind while they cater to Elon Musk and their ultra-wealthy backers. This disastrous, Trump-endorsed reconciliation bill is the epitome of greed and will rip away health care from Michiganders and make life harder for the constituents these Republicans were elected to protect.” - Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Curtis Hertel

IOWA: "Iowans know that a strong economy isn’t built from the top down—it’s built by investing in families, workers, and local businesses. But instead of ensuring the wealthiest pay what they owe Reps. Miller-Meeks, Hinson, Nunn, and Feenstra just voted for more tax giveaways for billionaires and big business at the expense of everyday Iowans. This isn’t just unfair—it threatens the very foundation of Iowa’s economy.” - Jackie Cordon of Indivisible Iowa

NEBRASKA: “Nebraska For Us is concerned after Congressman Don Bacon and our state’s entire House delegation voted in favor of this resolution. These drastic cuts could not come at a worse time for people who are just trying to put food on the table as their costs continue to rise. Our lawmakers need to stand up for our working class neighbors and friends, especially when there is so much economic uncertainty in the air. They should not be made to sacrifice their security and stability in order to pay for tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations.” - Nebraska For Us State Director Angie Lauritsen

NEW YORK: “It should come as no surprise that New York’s House Republicans want to gut their constituents’ healthcare, access to healthy food, high-quality childcare, support services in public schools, and more—all to give billionaires an even bigger tax cut. Representatives Lawler, LaLota, Malliotakis, Stefanik, Tenney, Langworthy, and Garbarino, have just slapped working New Yorkers in the face.” - Invest in Our New York Campaign

NEW JERSEY: “Rather than asking billionaires and big corporations to pay their fair share, House Republicans are forcing working families to pay the price. Their budget would add $4.6 trillion to the national debt while gutting essential programs and leaving New Jersey struggling to close the gap on essential services. The scale of these cuts is staggering, and New Jersey simply cannot fill the gap left by the federal government. On the same day that Governor Murphy, in his budget speech, addressed difficult budget decisions and political chaos in Washington, DC, Representatives Van Drew, Smith, and Kean Jr. voted to advance a reckless federal budget bill that puts families, seniors, and our entire state economy in jeopardy.” - For the Many Campaign Director Eric Benson
